– The Trouble with Principles: Or, How to Not Lose Friends and Alienate People When Learning Economics (#OccupyWallStreet, #OWS)
Perhaps the most interesting bit,
To casually label economics a science is at best aspirational, at worst manipulative, at a minimum misleading. At the introductory...

The Good Part
Before I write this, I feel like I have to explain that I’m agnostic. That is, I don’t claim to know anything about the existence of god. More specifically, I don’t care about the existence of god. I don’t go to church, and it doesn’t matter to me if you do or don’t.
This – of course – doesn’t exclude me from wanting to make the world a better place. It...

The Best Albums of 2010
2010 was a tremendous year for music. A lot of stuff came out that felt entirely fresh and took me completely by surprise, while a few of my favorites came out with albums that failed to hold me for long (Beach House and Caribou in particular). Many great albums came out in 2010, but the five listed here left the deepest imprint on me. They’re not listed in order.
Black Noise – Pantha Du...

– Mashable
Every party in this case is ridiculous.
However, it’s really interesting to see Facebook butt up against government regulations as they outgrow a state-based context. In the future, legally changing your name or other bureaucratic filings might be immaterial within a global,...

Do people really want participatory government?
mchronister:

Christina Cacioppo on why Cherry, an iPhone app that lets you order an an immediate car wash, is compelling:
Like Opez, Cherry enables car washers to become freelancers. They don’t need to work for a car-washing shop and so can retain more of the profits generated by their work.
Historically, one service provided by a car-washing shop has been finding, staying in touch with,...

– Paul Jamason from SD Urban on how the public discussion around the proposed Wings of Freedom sculpture reveals the sorry state of public discourse in San Diego.
I second the call to support Voice of San Diego, and for the record, I have no problem with the wings.

What's Actually Simple
measuredvoice:
John Gruber, on Nick Bilton’s analysis of Twitter’s new UI:
Simplification may well be the publicly-stated goal of today’s new Twitter UI. But I don’t buy a word of Bilton’s analysis. The new Twitter UI doesn’t hide @username mentions or #hashtags. They’re all still there. Two of the big icons on the four tabs at the bottom of the screen are “@” and “#”. I totally agree that the...
Give to Code for America
kevincurry:
I’ve been an advisor for a great civic fellowship program called Code for America for the past year. CfA matches talented developers, designers, community managers, and project leads with municipal governments that struggle to keep up with the Internet. It’s like Teach for America for geeks. In this season of giving I’d appreciate it if you would make a tax-deductible contribution...
